We had a fabulous weekend in Palmerston North, visiting the family :)
It was great to see Aunty Lynn, as I'd not seen her in about 15 years!

Roo showed no fear when feeding the 100's of ducks at the park.

The playgrounds were a big hit :)

We were lucky with the weather and managed to get out and about most of the weekend.

We had a wonderfully relaxed Christmas and New Year. The sun was out (mostly) so we spent Christmas Day on the beach.
Roo is still a bit young to appreciate it all, but he loved all his fabulous gifts. A big thank you to friends and family :)

We met up with our 'March Mums' for a bit of a Christmas gathering at the zoo this weekend. It's the first time Roo's been since he started walking, and he really loved having a good charge about.

Community Creche

I got the phone call I've been waiting for today :) Roo has a place at the community creche which is totally awesome! I had to put Roo on the waiting list when he was 6 weeks old, and now they don't even allow people onto the list as it's so popular.

It's not just popular because it's a fraction of the price of the other privately run creches in Devonport, it has a fantastic reputation because of the great facilities and wonderful teachers.

I'm beyond excited! He'll start off with one morning session per week (9am-12pm) and then go up to two in April and three the following year.

One of our best buds from Edinburgh is here, visiting us and taking in the atmosphere for the Rugby World Cup, so we took the opportunity for a wee jaunt up north for a couple of nights.

The bach had amazing views!

We spotted a pod of Orcas on oue first day, which was just awesome!

The boys headed further up north for a look at Cape Reinga and 90 Mile Beach, and I took Roo to one of the beaches near by.

We took a wander into Keri Keri and saw Rainbow Falls before heading off to see a friend for lunch.

It was all a bit exhausting!

Taupo

We're just back from a lovely weekend down in Taupo.

It was quite wintery, but that didn't stop us from getting out and about. Duncan's taken 100's of photos, but here's a few of my faves:

The hotel we stayed in was excellent and the food was some of the best we've had in New Zealand.

The plane ride down was fun :) Just a tiny wee plane with one seat either side of the aisle, about sixteen in total. There was no door to the cockpit, so on the flight back in the evening, you could see all the runway lit up.

I'll post some more photos when Duncan's had a chance to process them.

Well it doesn't look like we'll be buying a house in Devonport anytime soon. The exchange rate from £ to $ is shocking. Add into the mix a falling house market (or at the very best, flat) and interest rates likely to rise, we'd be committing financial suicide if we bought a house in Devonport just now.

So we have a couple of options. House prices in the UK have dropped and we have savings in NZ$ that we could change into UK£ at a fantastic rate. Or we could just continue to rent and save in Devonport.

We'll apply for citizenship at the end of the year, but after that... who knows?

Before You Ask.....

...no he's not walking yet LOL

He's still cruising about and has great balance, but just doesn't seem that interested in walking. He's a great climber and will quite merrily climb up the stairs, or up the steps to the slide. He pushes is trolly about, but won't hold your hand and walk about. All my other mummy pals are telling me to make the most of it ;)

He's still only 4 teeth, despite some fairly horrible teething troubles of the last couple of weeks. He's had a nasty cold, which never helps and a full on fever at the weekend with his temperature reaching 40.3˚c!

He's a lot better now though and charging about the house 'playing' with the cat :)

Nap Naps

Roo's down to one daytime nap in the afternoon. Although he's still quite tired in the mornings, if he takes an early nap, he has trouble settling in the afternoon. So now he goes down around 12pm-12.30pm and will sleep for a couple of hours.

This means we get to do loads of cool stuff in the mornings and by the time he's had his lunch and is ready for his nap, he just falls asleep in my arms :)

Tutukaka Coast

We've just spent the long holiday weekend staying in a holiday home (bach)on the Tutukaka Coast.
Cyclone Wilma hit NZ on the Friday, but by Saturday, the sun was out and there was plenty of time to enjoy the view from the deck.

Plenty of fun and nonsense ensued :)

We made pizzas in the outdoor pizza oven on the Saturday night and went out to dinner at a local restaurant on Sunday night.

The house we were staying in had organic vege gardens, which you could help yourself from, and there were also some chooks and goats.

Matapouri Bay was just a few minutes drive away.

Roo had his own little beach tent to keep cool.

Despite being a holiday weekend, we didn't get stuck in any traffic, which meant we had time to stop on the way home for coffee and cake.

A Busy Day

It's all go in the McLean household.... literally! Roo started to crawl today :) I think he's been watching the cat, as the first thing he went for was my power cord for the laptop.

He's also cut his first tooth. We've had a couple of unsettled nights, but fingers crossed, he'll start to feel a bit better now it's cut through.

I'll try and get some film of him crawling. We're going away for the weekend, so he'll have plenty of time and space to practice his new skill.

Christmas Excess

It looks like Roo piled on the pounds over Christmas. He's just had his 9month check and in 5 weeks he's put on nearly 1kg and grown 5cm! So he now weighs 8.73kg and is 74cm :)

Christmas & Hogmanay 2010

Well we're back home, but had a great Christmas and Hogmanay in the UK.

First stop was Mum & Dad's in Whitley Bay. We took the train down, which was much more pleasant than our journey from London.

Christmas Day was lovely and the kids had plenty of presents to open, which they seemed quite pleased about.

Mum made a fantastic lunch and then we had even more to look forward to when Stephen & Corrine joined us on Boxing Day. We were still working our way through the fridge contents when Ann & Jimmy popped by to say hello later that evening.

Back in Edinburgh we met up with as many friends as possible and Stephen had the chance for some quality time with Roo.

Hogmanay was a great laugh and the fireworks were pretty orsum :)

On New Years Day we wandered up Arthur's Seat to admire the view.

And what better way to start the New Year, than with a gorgeous wee baby girl. Jenny gave birth to Aimee Margaret on the 2nd January.

The journey back home was much less eventful and we had a lovely send off from the Griffith clan.

I think I may have packed too many of these:

because I had to do some re-packing of the cases, as one of them was 35kg! ooops

Roo was on form again for his flights home and just couldn't stop laughing at his Dad :)

Here At Last

Well we made it to Edinburgh. It only took 4 days of travel! Our routing ended up being Auckland-Sydney-Singapore-Cyprus-London-Glasgow-Edinburgh.

Thankfully, Ruairidh was a wee gem for most of the time. He only cried twice and that was right at the end of the trip when we were caught up in a stampede at Euston Station, trying to catch a train to Scotland, and then again when we arrived, because it was late and I had to wake him up to put warm clothing on him.

We're staying in a flat, right in the center of Edinburgh, with a great view of the castle. We'll have an amazing view of the fireworks at Hogmanay!

Just took it easy today and tried to get Roo back into his normal routine. He's gone down for bed OK, so fingers crossed.

Wow it's cold! I need to buy a new hat.... of the woolly variety.

Not quite our original routing, but due to the awful weather in the UK, our flight was diverted to Cyprus as they were the only airport in Northern Europe accepting flights.

We'd had good flights so far though.

Roo's been napping, rather than having long sleeps, so it's been quite tiring.

BA have put us in a hotel for the night and they're paying for meals and drinks, so it's not too bad. we've seen some of the footage on TV of people sleeping in airports, and we're counting ourselves lucky!

Really looking forward to our holiday. We leave Devonport at 8.30am on Saturday and will hopefully arrive at our flat in Edinburgh around 14.00pm on Sunday. We'll have email contact during the trip and we'll also buy a couple of UK sim cards, so will let you all know the numbers ASAP.

I was getting my hair cut today and decided the boy's mop of curls needed to be tamed, so my lovely hairdresser gave him a bit of stylee do.

He wanted to chop all his curls off and make his hair all the same length, but I couldn't bring myself to do that, so he still has a bit of a mop, but it looks a lot tidier.

Hamming It Up For The Camera

The local supermarket has just started to stock 'Freedom Farm' shaved ham, and it's just as well, cause Ruairidh loves it.

At the moment his biggest meal of the day has switched from tea to breakfast. You wouldn't believe the amount of porridge he eats. So by lunch time, he's usually not that hungry, but is happy to try different things and really just have a bit of a play and explore different tastes and textures.

It's A Wrap!

I'm so proud of my wee boy. I decided last week to try and wean Roo off swaddling and he took it really well. With the warmer weather on it's way, it was essential to get him used to sleeping un-wrapped ASAP. The only change to his sleeping at night is that he's waking up early, so instead of waking up at 7.15am ish he's waking at 6am ish. He still goes down at 6.30pm though, so I can't really complain. His day sleeps are getting a little better, and it does make it much easier, now that he can sleep in the stroller without having to be wrapped up.

He's doing really well with solids. I'm still not rushing anything and if he's misses meals, it's not a problem. That said, he seems to really enjoy his breakfast and dinner. He has porridge made with water and apple juice for his breakfast. We had a bit of a scare last week when I made it with cow's milk and he had an allergic reaction. His poor wee face swelled up like a balloon, so no more cow's milk for a few months I think. Lunch times are a bit all over the place, as we don't have a great routine during the day, what with his irregular naps. Time allowing though, he'll have something like vegemite on toast, carrot sticks, courgettes, mandarins, that kind of thing. At dinner I spoon feed him and he'll wolf down most meals we give him.

It's great now that summer is on it's way and we go to the park and the beach lots :)

I took Roo to be weighed and he hasn't really put on much weight, but I'm trying not to worry, because he's such a happy wee thing ♥

Bula! We're Back

We had a lovely time in Fiji. Ruairidh coped very well with all the travel and was a bit of a hit with the Air NZ staff and fellow travelers. He managed a quick snooze on the way there, but flying back, the flight was full and quite noisy, so he didn't enjoy it as much.

We had a lovely beach just a few steps from our bure and you could stand in the clear water and just watch all the fish swimming around your feet.

The place we were staying was called 'Maui Palms' which on on the Coral Coast in Fiji. We booked it because there's only 4 x beachfront bures, which meant we could put Roo down for naps and to bed at night and still enjoy the sunshine and infinity pool, whilst listening for when he woke up. We had all our meals on our veranda, so again, didn't have to worry about leaving the boy alone in the room.

Roo just loved all the swimming, so I'll be taking him to the local pool on a weekly basis from now on, and hopefully into the sea during the summer.

Duncan enjoyed the pool too :)

We walked along to a couple of nearby resorts, which offered a change of scenery, but we were glad to get back to the peace and quiet of Maui Palms.
